MANILA, Philippines — Several parts of the country will continue to have cloudy weather on the first day of 2025 as three weather systems affect the archipelago, state meteorologists said on Tuesday afternoon.

The northeast monsoon or amihan still affects the northernmost provinces like Batanes, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Meanwhile, the shear line — the area over the sea where cold and warm air meet — would also cause cloudy skies, resulting in rains over the northeastern part of Luzon on Wednesday, January 1, 2025.

“This shear line will still cause light to moderate rains over parts of Cagayan and Apayao. Batanes would also experience the same weather — cloudy skies and rains — as it is affected by the northeast monsoon,” weather specialist Ana Clauren-Jorda said in Filipino.

Southern provinces, like Palawan, and areas in Bicol Region, the Visayas, and Mindanao would also have the same conditions, but this time due to the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).

According to Pagasa, moderate to heavy rains may persist over Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and Dinagat Islands on Wednesday.

“The intertropical convergence zone will still prevail over parts of Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao. This intertropical convergence zone would bring scattered rain showers, thunderstorms, and lightning strikes over Eastern and Central Visayas, and Albay, Sorsogon, and Catanduanes,” Clauren-Jorda said.

“The Dinagat Islands would also experience occasional rains due to the intertropical convergence zone. In the remaining parts of Visayas and Mindanao, we should still expect thunderstorms or short bursts of rain showers,” she added.

Expected temperatures in Luzon on Wednesday remain relatively low with the following temperature ranges:
